Works in Progress - Fall 2014 Edition

Focusing on one project at a time is not my strong suit. I love working on one project, then starting another, then another, and another. One reason why I have multiple projects in the works is because I don't like doing things like buttonholes, buttons, hems, bias binding. Things that usually occur near the end of the project. Things that complete a project. Another reason is that I like the variety of working on multiple projects. It might seem like I'm unfocused (I admit that I can be), but really it's just that my sewing life mimics my working life. Especially at my last job, it wasn't unusual for me to work on multiple projects every week. One time a colleague mentioned he had only charged his time to four projects in his 5+ years of working for the company. Another colleague and I were shocked; we routinely charged our time to more than four projects in a single week. Juggling multiple projects is not something I was just forced to do, but I also loved...

Argh, Interfacing!!!

Sooooooooo....this happened on my current "vintage" make: I was *THIS* close to finishing a #VintagePledge  sewing project, but progress came to a screeching halt when I basted on the bow and discovered I looked like I was auditioning for the circus. Seriously, my bow looks NOTHING like the one on the envelope. The fabric is a voile and I was so hesitant to interface the bow, as is instructed in the pattern. But I found an "ultra lightweight interfacing" made by Pellon that I had in my stash. It felt very lightweight with a good amount of drape so I went ahead and fused that bitch onto my beautiful voile, knowing full well that I didn't have enough leftover fabric to redo it if it turned out shitty. Well, it turned out shitty and now I'm stuck doing this: yep, I'm scraping the interfacing off the bow ever so delicately. I've gone through a fantastic episode of Parenthood and a gawd-awful episode of Grey's A...

Vintage Sewing Patterns and Estate Sales

I always get so envious of bloggers who snap up vintage sewing patterns at garage sales. Who are these people that sell these items?? How can I get some? Of course I could scour ebay and pay for them, but I'm kinda over ebay these days. I've never been a huge fan of garage sales. I'm not much of a collector and I guess when I decide I need something I never think about searching garage sales because it just seemed like it involved a lot of looking and not enough buying success. Although I gotta admit the appeal of garage sales started to creep up on me the past year because of all the posts from J. Money about this subject. Maybe it's his writing style, but my goodness, does he ever make garage sales and antique shops sound like the coolest effing places. A couple months ago I downloaded the free Craiglist app so I could easily search for garage sales in my area. I also narrowed down the search by specifically searching for "sewing" in the garage sales ca...
